This brass inkwell, showing Cupid on a giant lily-pad, is an example of a Victorian mass-produced utilitarian/decorative object which, in one form or another, would have been found in most houses at that time.

This one was handed down to me in 196g when my parents moved from the family home to a much smaller house, and in turn was handed down to them by my paternal grandparents. (They lived at 100 Brook Street Colchester, Essex).

All the grandparents of both Jane and I were born late in Queen Victoria's reign, and we happily received through the families a number of objects like this one, as will be seen in the weeks/months to come! Maybe it was this direct living connection with the Victorian era that gave rise to our admiration for all things Victorian, and led us over the years to acquiring many iters from what was an astonishingly creative period in English decorative arts.
