Catalogue number 06.01

A Louis Phillipe ‘encrier’, modelled on Napoleon’s early sarcophagus, French, dated circa 1850, by an unknown maker. Height 11 cm. by width 10 cm. by depth 6 cm.

The body of the Emperor Napoleon, who died in exile on St. Helena in 1821, was brought back to France in 1840, during the reign of King Louis Philippe, and interred in a sarcophagus, (on which this bronze inkwell was modelled and whose twin inkwells cover an effigy of the Emperor's body), in St.Jerome’s Chapel at Les Invalides.  His body was moved in 1861 to the monumental red quartzite sarcophagus in the Dome of Les Invalides.

It was bought at an auction at Christies saleroom in South Kensington (Sale number 4949, lot 12) in April 2006, which in fact was a sale of Russian and Empire objets d’art from the personal collection of Vernon Vieux-Pernon, who ran Hermitage Antiques Limited at 97, Pimlico Road, London SW1.
