02.38 This be the verse
English
A landscape in oils on canvas by English artist Simon Keenleyside (1975 - ), painted in 2002. Signed and titled on the back. Framed. 154 cm wide by 184 cm high.
Simon Keenleyside gained a first-class honours degree in Fine Arts from Brighton University where he studied between 1997 and 2000. He then graduated with a Master's degree from the Royal College of Art in 2002, and this picture was part of his degree show in July 2002 where we bought it from him. It went on to become part of his portfolio for his winning entry for the “Emerging artist of the year 2002’. A full biography and examples of his recent work can be found at his website https://simonkeenleyside.com . The following is from his notes at his degree show:- ‘I am very interested in memory and the places which we inhabit – particularly parks and gardens. These can be seen as spaces in which one can escape from everyday life. ‘This be the verse’ is composed using a number of different references. Most importantly it reminds me of a place which I knew when I was growing up. The painting does not physically represent this space, rather it captures the essence of it. This space was a park to which I would go to escape the outside world. I chose a title from that of a poem by Philip Larkin which expands upon the idea that your parents are to blame for the torments of teenage and adolescent angst’.
