83.03 A collection of Christmas cards

A collection of 26 Christmas cards created by Edward Campden RCA, dating from 1983 to 2017.

These cards, celebrating Christmas and the New Year, were sent to Jane and I by her aunt and uncle, Frances and Edward Campden. Hand painted by Edward in a variety of styles, they show his astonishing skills and an impish sense of humour. The picture shows him working on the 2017 card. Of course, part of the pleasure both for the sender and the receiver of these cards is the testing of one's knowledge of art history in identifying (where it is not directly indicated) who or what he was imitating.

Edward Campden (born January 12th 1931) studied at the Royal College of Art in London from 1953 to 1956, specializing in ceramics. He subsequently taught at various schools in and around his home at Langley Mill in Nottinghamshire.

There are several examples of his work as a potter and sculptor in the Collection in the Campden Room on the first floor. (Catalogue numbers 72.09, 86.02, 87.05, 92.04 and 96.01).

Pintadas a mano por Edward en varios estilos, muestran sus asombrosas habilidades y un travieso sentido del humor. La foto le muestra trabajando en la tarjeta de 2017. Por supuesto, parte del placer tanto para el emisor como para el receptor de estas tarjetas es la prueba de su conocimiento de la historia del arte al identificar (donde no está directamente indicado) a quién o qué estaba imitando.
