A self-portrait by British artist John Whitlock painted circa 1950, oils on canvas, signed and framed.  95 cm. high by 62 cm. wide.

John Whitlock Codner was born in 1913, son of the well-known artist Maurice Codner. The influence of his father, and that of Sir Alfred Munnings PRA who was a friend of his father, shaped his career and he studied at the Regent Street Polytechnic School of Art in London and became a prolific portrait painter, based in Devon.  He served in the British army during the second World War in the Royal Engineer’s regiment, where he was one of a diverse group charged with deceiving the enemy through camouflage painting and other means. The group consisted of, amongst others, stained-glass artist Steven Sykes, sculptor Edward Bainbridge Copnall, stage magician Jasper Maskelyne and film art director Peter Proud.  After the war, he taught at the Sir John Cass School of Art from 1947 to 1951, before returning to his career as a portrait painter. He exhibited at the Royal Academy and was an academician of the Royal West of England Academy. He died in 2008.

John Whitlock Codner nació en 1913, hijo del conocido artista Maurice Codner. La influencia de su padre y la de Sir Alfred Munnings PRA, que era amigo de su padre, moldeó su carrera. Estudió en la Regent Street Polytechnic School of Art de Londres y se convirtió en un prolífico retratista, con sede en Devon. Sirvió en el ejército británico durante la Segunda Guerra Mundial en el regimiento de Ingenieros Reales, donde fue miembro de un grupo diverso encargado de engañar al enemigo a través de pintura de camuflaje y otros medios.
