English

An English needlework picture dated c1690. 19 cm high by 25 cm wide.

In 1972, Jane's tutor for her AMA (Assocoate of the Museum's Association) studies was the reknowned costume historian Anne Buck, Keeper of the Gallery of English Costume at Platt Hall, near Manchester, and a founder member of the Costume Society. In order to be geographically close, Jane worked for a short period with Jean Palmer (nee Glover) who was Chief Textile Conservator at Platt Hall, and when she left, Jean gave her this fine small example of English needlework which she had bought in Norwich, as a thank you gift.
There are notes in Jean's handwriting on the back referring to 'long stitch, split stitch, couching and purling' which any needlework expert would surely recognise.

The biblical story of Judith and Holofernes is the subject of many renaissance and baroque paintings and sculptures - Botticelli, Michaelangelo, Caravaggio, Goya, Klimt etc. etc. All much grander than this 300 year- old little gem!
