Catalogue number 10.09

A fragment of a carved wood figure group, late 17th or early 18th century, German, 30 cm. high by 25 cm. wide by 10 cm. deep.

This very distressed carving probably represents Christ as ‘The Man of Sorrows’, carved on integral backboard and base. It has traces of polychrome painting. The painting on which this work may be based is ‘The Man of Sorrows’ from the 16th century by the Dutch artist Maarten van Heemskerk, depicting Christ after the crucifixion, attended by angels.  It was offered for sale at an auction of folk art at Christies South Kensington saleroom in November 2001, but (not surprisingly) did not sell.  Jane subsequently acquired it by private treaty.
