Lithograph (47/70) on wove paper with full margin created in 1964 by John Piper (1903-1992). Signed, mounted and framed. 56 cm. high by 73 cm wide.

I 'acquired' this picture in 1989 from an empty office building in Coventry which the company that I then worked for was about to demolish. The artist John Piper was well-known in Coventry because of the memorable stained-glass Baptistry window which he created for the new Coventry Cathedral in 1962. A print identical to this one, printed by the Curwen Press in London and published by Marlborough Fine Arts, London is held by the Tate Gallery. Their catalogue comments:- John Piper is one of the most significant British artists of the 20th century with a career in art which spanned over sixty years and incorporated a huge range of artistic media including printmaking, painting, drawing and illustration, photography, stained glass, fabric design, murals, stage sets and costume design. However, he is most well known for his prints and paintings of the romantic heritage of Britain, in which his subject matter was predominately architectural; often abbeys, churches, houses, castles, cottages. His style comes both from his English heritage and his commitment to the emergent modern and abstract movements that were developing when he graduated from the Royal College of Art in 1929. Dramatic, romantic combinations of colour, calligraphic line and experimental textures are the tenets of his oeuvre.
