An oil painting on wood by an unknown artist dating from the 1920's/1930's. 35 cm. wide by 55 cm. high.

After my father died in 1974, my mother continued to live on the Essex coast at Clacton-on-Sea in a small house near to the sea, and we used to go regularly to see her at weekends. She had a good friend who was a leading member of the local Arts Club, and we acquired this whimsical painting when they were clearing out an old store room. The main figure is wearing an orange lined and belted 1920's black dress, with diaphanous butterfly sleeves. She appears to be on a balcony between two classical pillars, overlooking a sea dotted with Chinese boats. What is all this about? But in some way, this picture captures the gaity of being on holiday by the seaside in foreign parts, and we brought it with us when we first came to Menorca. It has been here ever since.

Una pintura al óleo sobre madera de autor desconocido que data de los años 1920/1930. Mide 35 cm de ancho por 55 cm. de alto. No de catálogo 77.02.

"Después de que mi padre falleciera en 1974, mi madre siguió viviendo en la costa de Essex, en una pequeña casa cerca del mar en Clacton-on-Sea, y solíamos ir a verla los fines de semana. Ella tenía un buen amigo que era un miembro destacado del Club de Artes local, y adquirimos esta pintura caprichosa cuando estaban limpiando un antiguo almacén. La figura principal lleva un vestido negro de los años 20 forrado en naranja, con mangas de mariposa diáfana y con un cinturón. Parece estar en un balcón entre dos pilares clásicos, con vistas a un mar salpicado de barcos chinos. ¿De qué trata todo esto? Pues de alguna manera, esta imagen captura la alegría de estar de vacaciones en la costa en el extranjero, y la trajimos cuando llegamos a Menorca. Ha estado aquí desde entonces".
