A pencil drawing on paper by J C Goodchild (1898 – 1980), probably dated around 1940. Signed and framed. 34 cm. high by 27 cm. wide.

John Charles Goodchild was born in London in 1898. He went to school at the Strand School, but then in 1913 he emigrated with his family to South Australia.  In the First World War he served in France with the Australian Imperial Force. After the war, he studied at the South Australian School of Arts and Crafts and in 1926 he married a fellow, and significant, South Australian artist Doreen Rowley. They went together to England and studied at the Central School of Arts and Crafts in London before returning to South Australia, where Goodchild set up a studio in Adelaide. He worked there for the rest of his life as an etcher, a landscape artist, a painter and watercolourist. He was commissioned by the Australian Government as an official war artist in the second world war. He is described as ‘having an eye like a hawk and a fist as steady as a rock’ - characteristics perhaps portrayed in this picture, which we bought in the Camden Passage street market in London in 2001.
