Catalogue number 02.33

A sketch, done in pencil on paper, by Sir William Rothenstein (1872-1945), framed, signed and dated 1912, 15 cm. high by 12 cm. wide.

Rabindinath Tagore (1861- 1941), a true polymath, is one of the most influential figures in India’s literature and culture. A poet, essayist and campaigner, he advocated for multi-culturism, and became the first non-European to win the Nobel Prize for literature in 1913. He studied at University College in London, and made several further visits to England. On one of these in 1912, Sir William Rothenstein, (see 01.06) who was a friend of Rabindinath, arranged accommodation for him nearby to where he lived in Hampstead, and drew this as one of a series of at least six sketches, one other of which is in the Tate gallery, and yet another in the City of Manchester Art Gallery. There is a dedication at the bottom of the drawing ‘To my friend Mrs Pefrington(?) with best wishes Xmas 1912’. We bought this from Julie Collino (see 87.04) in 2002.
