A painting by English artist Alfred Egerton Cooper (1883-1974), oils on canvas, dating from the 1930’s. Framed and initialed. 50 cm. high by 40 cm. Wide.  

Alfred Edgerton Cooper was born in Wolverhampton in 1883.  He went to school at Durham School, and then studied at the Bilston School of Art from where he went to The Royal College of Art in London from 1908 to 1911.  His talent there was recognized by one of the College adjudicators John Singer Sargent, who offered him a job as his studio assistant. In the First World War he served in the Artist’s Rifles (see  https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Artists_Rifles ) and at the end of the war he was appointed as an official war artist for the Royal Air Force. He went on to enjoy a long a successful career, living and working in London as a portrait painter, and three of his works hang in the National Portrait Gallery – one of Winston Churchill, who sat for him in 1942. The Royal Collection has two portraits by him – King George VI in 1942 and Queen Elizabeth in 1958.  We  bought this picture from Julie Collino (see 87.04) in June 1997.

Alfred Edgerton Cooper nació en Wolverhampton en 1883. Asistió a la escuela de Durham School, y luego estudió en la Bilston School of Art, desde donde fue al Royal College of Art de Londres de 1908 a 1911. Allí su talento fue reconocido por uno de los jueces de la universidad, John Singer Sargent, quien le ofreció un trabajo como asistente de estudio. En la Primera Guerra Mundial sirvió en Artist's Rifles (ver https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Artists_Rifles) y al final de la guerra fue nombrado artista de guerra oficial de la Royal Air Force. Continuó disfrutando de una larga y exitosa carrera, viviendo y trabajando en Londres como retratista, y tres de sus obras están colgadas en la Galería Nacional de Retratos, una de las cuales representa a Winston Churchill, quien posó para él en 1942. La Colección Real tiene dos retratos suyos: el rey George VI, en 1942, y la reina Isabel, en 1958. Compramos esta imagen a Julie Collino (ver 87.04) en junio de 1997.
