English
A portrait in oils on canvas by English artist Gervase Elwes (1956 - ) painted in 1999. Framed. 60 cm high by 49 cm wide.
This is another one of the five pastiche paintings (the others being 99.02, 99.03, 99.04, and 99.06) by Gervase Elwes bought at a charity auction in aid of ‘Red Nose Day’ at the Crane Kalman gallery on London in March 1999. Jonathan Ross (1960 - ) is a broadcaster, film critic, comedian, actor, writer and producer. The full title of this work is ‘Jonathan Ross meets Mrs. Modigliani in the queue for the bathroom’, which is a reference to a remark that he is reported to have made that one thing that he disliked about being a celebrity was being recognised ‘even when queuing for the bathroom’. Gervase’s pastiche is based on the painting (one of many) by Amedeo Modigliani (1884 – 1920) of the love of his life and his common law wife Jeanne Hebuterne, painted in 1919.

Jonathan Ross
