English

English, manufactured by Gillows of Lancaster in the late nineteenth century. Mahogany framed. 86 cm high by 46 cm wide by 45 cm deep.

The Victoria and Albert Museum houses the National Art Library (a major world-renowned reference library) with a beautiful and historic reading room overlooking the main courtyard. In 1982, most of the original 60 or so library chairs, some admittedly in rather poor condition, were replaced and offered to staff.  In this way, we came to possess four of these finely-made solid mahogany Gillow chairs, dating from the 1870’s, and marked L 5803.  The seats have been re-upholstered and recovered using the original horsehair stuffing.

Gillows is one of the four great names of English furniture making (the others being Chippendale, Sheraton and Hepplewhite). Founded by Robert Gillow in 1730 in Lancaster, the company made all types of furniture and furnishing for 170 years, establishing an international reputation as a supplier of furniture to the upper middle class, the gentry and the aristocracy, often using  the newly-discovered mahogany wood (imported directly into Lancaster) from the West Indies.
