ENGLISH

In 1967, I was still living in Cape Town, and friendly with a local architect, Dennis Elliot. We used to run together on the trails on Table Mountain (more spectacular you will not find) and I used to baby-sit for his young family. He took pride in being a ‘renaissance man’ – interested in everything. Two of his drawings are in the collection (92.07 and 92.08). Through him, I met Stanley Pinker, his brother-in-law, from whom I bought this evocative picture. At that time, part of the northern suburbs of Cape Town, known as the Cape Flats, was a shanty town, with ramshackle buildings, abandoned cars and unmade roads. Stanley Pinker was not well-known at that time (he had just returned from studying in Europe), but he went on to become a leading South African artist. On Google, there is a mass of material – there is a good biographical note about him from an auction catalogue at www.bonhams.com/auctions/19602/lot/391

'Cape Night', de Stanley Faraday Pinker (1924 - 2012). Crayón sobre papel, 55cm. x 35cm. (ancho x alto). Enmarcada.
