02.13 Chelsea Old Church
English
A painting, oils on canvas, by English artist Naomi Lang (born 1891) dating from the 1930’s. Signed, and mounted in a gilt frame. 56 cm wide by 76 cm high.
Chelsea Old Church is architecturally uninspiring, but located as it is beside the River Thames at the end of Cheyne Walk, it is one of London’s iconic buildings, and it has been often painted, including by J M W Turner and James McNeill Whistler. It dates back to at least to the year 1157. It was badly damaged in 1941 during the bombing of the second World War, and was faithfully restored in the 1950’s. (For fans of the ‘Strike’ novels, the equally iconic Swan House, designed by Norman Shaw, is a few yards away). Naomi Lang studied at the Royal Academy Schools from 1911 to 1915. We bought this picture from Julie Collino (see 87.04) in February 2002.
