Catalogue number 87.03. 20th century reproduction in stone of an early 19th century marble statue. 160cm. high by 45cm. wide.

This sculpture is a reproduction in resin-bonded stone of the marble ‘Venus Italica’ by Antonio Canova (1757–1822), which was commissioned to replace the ancient roman ‘Medici Venus’ forcibly taken by Napoleonic forces from the Uffizi Gallery in Florence during their occupation of Italy. The young goddess with a head of curls and fresh from her bath, gathers her robe about her; the work was immediately hailed as Canova’s masterpiece. The poet Ugo Foscato wrote ‘When I saw this divine work of Canova, I sighed a thousand desires, for really if the Medici Venus was a most beautiful goddess, this is a most beautiful woman!’

We bought her (in a sale, needless to say) at the Wyevale Garden Centre, Stratford-on-Avon when we moved into Castle Hill House in Warwick in 1987, and she was with us, both inside and out, all the time we lived there.
